Set Up OneDrive Sync on Your Windows PC

Modified on Wed, Aug 5 at 12:42 PM

Applies to: Microsoft 365 Business users

Important: Before syncing OneDrive, ensure you have signed in to your Microsoft 365 account and that the OneDrive application is installed on your computer. Windows 11 includes OneDrive by default.

Overview

Syncing OneDrive allows you to access your work files directly from Windows File Explorer. Any changes you make to files in your OneDrive folder are automatically synchronized with Microsoft 365, making them available from your other devices and through the web.

Instructions

  1. Open your preferred web browser and go to https://office.com.
  2. Sign in using your business email address and password.
  3. If you are on the Microsoft 365 Copilot page, click the App Launcher (the 9-dot icon) in the upper-left corner.
  4. Click OneDrive.
  5. Once OneDrive opens in your browser, click the Settings icon (the gear in the upper-right corner).
  6. Select Sync this OneDrive.
  7. If prompted by your browser, click Open Microsoft OneDrive (or Open) to allow the OneDrive application to launch.
  8. If the OneDrive application is not installed or does not launch, follow the prompts to install or update Microsoft OneDrive, then repeat the previous step.
  9. Wait while OneDrive configures the synchronization. This may take a few moments.
  10. Open File Explorer.
  11. In the navigation pane, you should now see a folder similar to:

OneDrive – Your Organization Name

  1. Files saved in this folder are automatically synchronized with Microsoft 365 and are available from any device where you sign in using your business account.

Verify Sync is Working

  1. Create a test file in your OneDrive – Your Organization Name folder.
  2. Wait a few moments for synchronization to complete.
  3. A green checkmark beside the file indicates it has synced successfully.
  4. Return to OneDrive in your web browser and confirm that the file appears there.

Troubleshooting

  • If you do not see Sync this OneDrive, verify that you are viewing your OneDrive files and not another Microsoft 365 application.
  • If your browser repeatedly asks whether to open Microsoft OneDrive, choose Always allow if the option is available.
  • If OneDrive does not start, restart your computer and try again.
  • If the OneDrive folder does not appear in File Explorer, open the OneDrive application from the Windows Start menu and sign in using your business email address.
